How to install a Robinsun solar kit into an existing solar installation
Due to the increasing popularity of Robinsun solar kits, we have received more and more inquiries from customers who already have a photovoltaic system at home. These customers are familiar with the benefits of solar energy and want to add a plugin solar kit to expand their energy production. In these conversations several questions keep coming up, that we want to answer in this blog.
Robinsun solar kits capacity
To better understand the questions about adding our kits to larger solar installations, it’s important to remember the production capacity of each solar kit and panel we offer. The final production may vary depending on factors such as the solar panel model, location, installation angle, and orientation.
- Performance 400: Consists of one solar panel and one microinverter, plus cables and mounts. Its maximum production capacity is 400 W.
- Performance 800: Includes two solar panels and one microinverter, plus cables and mounts. Its maximum output capacity is 800 W, delimited by the microinverter. Performance kits qualify as a plugin solar kit that can be self installed, not requiring a certified electrician or installer, since they do not exceed the 800 W limit
- Plus 1600: Contains four solar panels, two microinverters, plus cables and mounts. Its maximum output is 1600 W. All Plus kits require certification since they exceed the 800 W limit.
- Plus 2400: Includes six solar panels, three microinverters, plus cables and mounts. Its maximum output is 2400 W. Like the previous kit, it requires certification and many customers combine it with a solar battery system to fully utilize all the energy produced.
- Plus 3200: Comes with eight solar panels, four microinverters, plus cables and mounts. Its maximum output is 3200 W and is connected to the home grid with 2 separate cables
Integrating a solar kit into an existing installation
We have compiled our customers’ most common questions to provide clear, expert answers. Here are the frequently asked questions about integrating a Robinsun kit into larger solar installations.
Do customers need to re-certify the additional solar kit?
Up to 800 W, no. If you already have a photovoltaic installation and add a Performance 800 kit, no modifications are needed—just plug it in and enjoy the extra energy.
If you want to install a Plus solar kit (larger than 800 W), you can absolutely do so, but you will need to either modify the existing certificate or obtain a new certificate for the new kit.
This depends on each case, as starting a new certification can sometimes be more convenient and cheaper than modifying the old one. At Robinsun, we offer a certification service. Check our CIE page for more information.
What are the production injection limits if customers do not certify the new solar kit?
Your company will operate within your certified limits. For example, if you have a certification for 3 kW and start producing excess surplus (more than 800 W), it’s likely they will notice and notify you that you’ve exceeded your limits.
This also depends on the existing certification. If a customer has a certification for 10 kW but their current production does not exceed 8 kW, the remaining capacity (2 kW) can be filled with Robinsun kits. They could add a Plus 1600 (4 panels) without issues, as the total production would still remain within the previously certified limit.
Therefore, if your plan is to install larger kits, we recommend either modifying your existing certification or starting a new one to reflect the exact amount of energy you are generating.
Will adding a new kit affect the compensation regime for surplus energy?
This depends on the electricity distributor. Customers should consult their distributor, as they determine the compensation terms. We cannot guarantee specifics since each company operates differently, and policies vary between them. But we have some information about it.
Usually, there are three compensation options available: monetary compensation, where the electricity company pays for the watts you inject into the grid; virtual battery, where the company stores the injected energy in a "virtual" account for you to use whenever needed; and a hybrid option, allowing you to store a portion of the energy for later use while receiving payment for the surplus.
Another important factor to consider is the region where you install the kit, as requirements can vary. In some areas, certification may be based on the microinverter, while in others it could be based on the panels and the amount of energy produced. Therefore, it's essential to check with your electricity provider to determine which certification option best suits your specific needs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, expanding your existing photovoltaic system with a Robinsun solar kit is a simple, efficient way to boost your energy production and maximize savings. Whether you choose a Performance kit up to 800 W or a bigger Plus kit, there’s an option to fit your needs and regulatory requirements. Our kits are designed for flexibility and ease of installation, making solar energy accessible to all.
